Satellite digital sound broadcasting system for mobile users using 2.6GHz radio frequency band is planned to be serviced in early 2004 in Japan. This system enables many users in mobile environment to receive a large number of various multimedia broadcasting programs such as high quality digital audio programs and MPEG-4 video programs with vehicular and very small portable receivers. In order to realize this service, a geostationary satellite with high power transponder and high gain large deployable antenna is used. Terrestrial repeaters, which retransmit broadcasting signal to the areas where the satellite signal is blocked by obstacles, are also used in urban areas. CDM (Code Division Multiplex) technique and RAKE receivers are used for effective utilization of spectrum as well as mitigation of multipath fading. A variety of verification tests including field tests have been carried out for past several years to evaluate the system performance. In this paper, recent development status of the system is described.
