This study aims at clarifying by cross-section data how the number of children influences the expenditure behavior of expenses for education in a household. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1) As the number of children increases in a household, the expenses for education per capita decreases in households of the same income level and with the household head of the same age. 2) The income elasticity of education expenses shows a tendency to decrease as the number of children in a household increases. 3) The expenditure behavior of education expenses in households of the upper income bracket is different from that in households of the lower income bracket. In both income brackets, the income elasticity decreases while the number of children dummy parameter increases in accordance with the increase in the number of children. This tendency is more marked in the lower income bracket. In other words, it is shown that larger expenses are spent for education in lower income households with fewer children.
