In the masseter and gastrocnemius three muscle fiber types can be distinguished histochemically by staining for succinate dehydrogenase activity. The relative contents of protein-bound SH groups in these three muscle fiber types were determined by quantitative cytophotometry by double staining for SH and protein. Significant differences in the relative SH contents of protein in different muscle fiber types were found in the gastrocnemius (type A<type B=type C), but not in the masseter. The relative SH content of protein in all muscle fiber types was higher in the masseter than in the gastrocnemnus.
