The effects of X-ray radiation (72 R and 240 R) on ascorbic acid was studied histochemically and biochemically in the adrenal glands, testes and ovaries of guinea pigs, rats and mice. These studies were performed in normal and X-ray radiated (at 1, 24, 48 and 72 hr) animals. X-ray radiation brought about an overall increase of ascorbic acid in guinea pig and rat adrenal glands whereas the mouse adrenal gland exhibited decreased contents at 72 hr following both doses of X-ray radiation. Testes and ovaries, however, had an increased ascorbic acid content in all three animals. The histochemical observations were almost identical with biochemical results. It is known that ascorbic acid is involved in the biosynthesis of steroidogenesis, and the increased ascorbic acid levels in these tissues might be a result of an increased rate of hormonogenesis to overcome the stress condition. The significance of alterations in ascorbic acid content in the adrenal glands, testes and ovaries of guinea pigs, rats and mice is discussed.
