In order to examine the influences of the directivity of microphones and sound sources on active control of one dimensional sound field in a duct, we studied the sound fields which are generated by the interference of controlled secondary source with noise source. Sound reflections at both ends of the duct generate standing wave under certain conditions, and active control of such sound fields becomes difficult. When unidirectional microphones are used for active noise control, the system can detect only propagating noise and exact cancellation becomes possible. And when additional sound source is also unidirectional, unnecessary feedback sound, which propagates to noise source side, can be eliminated. In such a system, the resultant sound field consists of only travelling noise in the area between noise source and additional sound source. If microphones or additive sound sources are omnidirectional, standing wave fields are generated in the duct under the certain conditions which are determined by the location of the devices and frequency of the noise, and then perfect control is impossible. These results were confirmed by experiment with Filtered-X LMS adaptive control system.
