In order to compare precisely the data from social surveys on community response to noise carried out throughout the world, equivalent noise annoyance scales in different languages are necessary. As a part of an international joint study designed by ICBEN Team 6, the authors constructed a 5-point noise annoyance scale in Japanese through an experiment with 1,102 subjects, ranging in age from their 20s to over 60, in four areas in Japan. The noise annoyance modifiers, "hijoni," "daibu," "tasho," "sorehodo...nai" and "mattaku...nai," were selected as the labels of the scale from 21 pre-selected modifiers based on equidistant intensity, preference and deviation of intensity.
