International joint study on the measurement of community response to noise: Comparison of Japanese noise annoyance modifiers between age brackets and areas

In order to construct noise annoyance scales comparable between different languages, the authors conducted an experiment on noise annoyance modifiers in Japanese with 1,102 subjects, ranging in age from their 20s to over 60, in four areas in Japan following the method proposed by ICBEN Team 6. The five modifiers, "hijoni," "daibu," "tasho," "sorehodo...nai" and "mattaku...nai," were selected as the labels of the Japanese scale. It was found that these modifiers were suitable for the scale for social surveys on community response to noise, because the differences in intensity of these modifiers between age brackets and areas were relatively small although a significant difference in intensity of "tasho" between age brackets was found. On the other hand the sexual, regional and age-bracket differences in the intensities of modifiers, "kanari" and "kiwamete," which have frequently been used for the top two points of the scale, were relatively large.
