This paper is concerned with the character of piano sound. Velocity waveforms of strings, driving force waveforms and velocity waveforms of the soundboard, and sound pressure waveforms are considered. Waveforms of the piano are made by an analog simulator ; and then the mechanism of sound generation in the piano is clarified. Pulse-waves caused by struck strings propagate on strings and reflect on the soundboard. At that time, the soundboard is vibrated, a part of the vibrating energy is released and piano sound is generated. The free vibration influenced by the driving-point admittance on the soundboard plays an important role in the formation of timbre. The spectrum of piano sound is considered and the character of the sound is given.
