Ivan Bunin is generally regarded as a realist, though he worked in the period of Russian modernist movements. A member of "Znanie" group organized under the leadership of Maxim Gorky, Bunin never committed to any of the contemporary modernist groups, such as symbolists, acmeists and futurists. He even severely criticized modernists for the "vulgarity" or "pompousness" of their works. But in his own works we cannot help noticing certain elements which distinguish the writer from realists in the traditional sense and, consequently, assimilate him to so-called modernists. One of such elements is absense of plot. In most of his novels there exsists only a narrator who can be identified with the author himself, but no fictitious characters. The novels consist of the description of this narrator's meditation on abstract themes (life, death, immortality, mission of poets and artists, and so on), and the peculiarly lyrical atmosphere aroused by the location and circumstances where he finds himself. Incidentally, there is no direct relation between the metaphysical topics of the narrator's meditation and the concrete time and space of the novel. This causes a peculiar kind of disjunction of the narrative from the narrated, and, hence, alienation of the plot as such. This might be explained by Bunin's belief that the specific quality of poets and artists lies in their ability to feel other times, nations and people as vividly as his own. Bunin wrote all his life such very short, lyrical and metaphysical novels, where we can trace the influence of the modernist movements in the beginning of this century. The purpose of this paper is to reemphasize such modernist features of Bunin, which have so long been neglected by the "realistic" understanding of his works.
