A method for controlling the propagation of structure-borne sound based on vibration intensity is effective because vibration intensity implies energy carried by structure-borne waves. Thus, two methods for controlling vibration intensity in the far-field are discussed in this paper. Vibration intensity carried by a bending wave propagating along a beam can be decomposed into two components : one is related to the mechanical impedance and the other is related to the bending moment impedance. Moreover, in the far-field, mechanical impedance is inversely proportional to moment impedance. Using this relationship, two methods are available for controlling the vibration intensity : (a) a new method based on the control of the acceleration gradient at a point, and (b) the conventional method based on the control of acceleration at a point. In order to compare two methods, a computer simulation based on an actual model was conducted. In this simulation an adaptive algorithm using the Filtered-X LMS algorithm was used. In the results, method (a) exhibited lager attenuation of vibration intensity than method (b) in the high frequency region.
