Succeeding the Quaternary stratigraphical studies on the tephras, terraces and coastal plains in Japan, some detailed investigations have been focussed on the inland or intermontane sedimentary basins in recent years. Those results obtained in the Aizu Basin in Northeast Japan and the Nagano and Matsumoto Basins in Central Japan have contributed greatly to elucidate the historical development process and tectonic control, and established several keystones of the Quaternary researches in Japan. A new and quite precise research method has been progressed in the Nojiriko district of Central Japan, by means of careful excavation of the lake bottom sediments lamina by lamina as well as the detailed geological investigations of the surrounding areas. Such an approach might enable us to open a new way and viewpoint of the Quaternary researches in the future.
