From the viewpoint that ammonium in biotites from metasedimentary rocks is originated from the nitrogen of proteins which were supplied on the depositional floor at the past time, the diagenetic fate of nitrogen was considered. The proteins are rapidly eliminated in a early stage of diagenesis by microbial activity and chemical hydrolysis. However, a part of the nitrogen is incorporated in the kerogen which is formed from decomposed organic matter through the process of condensation and polymerization. The kerogen is stabilized by interaction with the surrounding clay minerals and preserved in the sediments throughout geologic time. In the course of diagenesis, a slow change of elemental composition in kerogen continues, i.e. oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen decrease and carbon increases. As a result, ammonium ions are producted in the sediments by release of nitrogen from the kerogen, and absorbed by clay minerals such as montmorillonite or vermiculite. On the other hand, the alteration of montmorillonite (or vermiculite) to illite takes place with increasing depth. This process is accompanied by dehydration of bound water of montmorillonite and fixation of potassium ion into the interlayer position. This mineralogical alteration will accelerate the release of nitrogen from the kerogen, and produced ammonium ions are also taken up by illite as its interlayer cation because of the similar ionic radius of ammonium and potassium. In an early stage of metamorphism, ammonium ions which were held with in the structures of illite are inherited by crystallizing biotite which may be formed by the reaction between chlorite and recrystallized illite (muscovite). Ammonium ion in biotite is still stable at high temperature.
