The author made unilateral tissue loss by using the tongues of dogs and examined its healing process of the central and the peripheral cut-surface patho-histologically and nerve-histologically from the 1st day to the 180th day after tissue loss. Results were summarized as follows ; 1) On the healing of wound in central cut-surface and in peripheral cut-surface, one couldn't observe any differences according to the lapse of the time. On the 60th day after tissue loss, its healing of wound was concluded histologically. 2) On the 3rd day after tissue loss, the mucosal epithelium of cut-surface increased and began to cover the cut-surface, and on the 7th to 10th day after tissue loss it was covered completely. After that, the hyperplasia of the epithelium and the formation of short rate pegs were observed, and the regular epithelium was formed on the 30th day after tissue loss. 3) Fibroblasts and capillary vessels of the cut-surface appeared on the 3rd day after tissue loss and they increased gradually and showed a remarkable increase on the 5th day after tissue loss. 4) On the 5th day after tissue loss, the regeneration of muscle fibers was observed in the cut-surface of muscle fibers and the way of regeneration was a continuous one. This phenomenon of regeneration continued until about 60th day after tissue loss. 5) Nerve fibers of the central cut-surface suffered from the primary degeneration. They formed medullary globules on the 1st day after tissue loss, and regenerated nerve fibers were observed on the 2nd day after tissue loss. The process of the primary degeneration changes rapidly and this degeneration takes a short time. 6) All nerve fibers in the peripheral portion from the injured part suffered from the 'Wallerian degeneration', and the formation of medullary segmentation was observed on the 3rd day after tissue loss. On the 5th day after tissue loss, the formation of Bungner's bands was observed. 7) The degeneration process of nerve fibers was stronger and swifter in the peripheral portion from the injured part than in the other parts and it progressed gradually with the centripetal direction. Among the large, the middle, and the small size nerve fibers in the same nerve bands, the degeneration of the small size nerve fibers was a little swifter than the other sizes, but later there was little defference among the degeneration of three sizes. 8) The process of the absorption and disappearance of the degenerated nerve fibers can be observed mainly in the migrating cell and the Schwann cell. This phenomenon could be observed from the 3rd day to the 20th day after tissue loss. 9) On the 5th day after tissue loss, the nerve fibers regenerated by the continuous way were observed at the cut end of central nerve bands. On the 7th day after tissue loss, the cut end of axon formed 'microscopical amputation neuroma'. On the 20th day after tissue loss, they formed 'amputation neuroma' in the granulation tissue. 10) Rarely, a numerous small nerve bands were extended and distributed from the central 'amputation neuroma' to the connective tissue under the mucosal epithelium of cut-surface, in this case the formation of taste bud can be observed. 11) 'Bungner's bands' was completed on the degenerated nerve bands of peripheral portion on the 20th to the 30th day after tissue loss. The regenerated nerve fibers can be observed in those nerve bands on the 20th day after tissue loss. And the distribution of the nerve fibers in peripheral portion was similar to that of the normal tissue on the 180th day after tissue loss. 12) By cutting off the peripheral nerve, ganglion-cell relative to this showed a remarkable variations in form. For one or two days after tissue loss, ganglion-cell expanded and the deviation of its nucleus occurred. At the time of the formation of medullary segmentation, ganglion-cell shrank and became into an ellipse and its nucleus showed a remarkable deviation. At the time of the appearance of regenerated nerve fibers, ganglion-cell changed its form into an oval and the deviation of its nucleus was not observed. When the nerve fibers showed a marked regeneration, the atrophy of the ganglion-cell and the deviation of its nucleus showed a remarkable change again. According as the regenerated nerve fibers were completed, ganglion-cell was similar to the normal finding.
