In order to determine the feature of the genesis, growth and completion of the marrow cavity in the human mandible, a histological study was done based on a large celloidin-embedded section method. Materials were 52 human mandibles including 24 prenatal and 28 postnatal cases. The length of fetuses was measured from the crown to heel. Results were as follows : 1) In the condylar cartilage and that in incisor region (Meckel's cartilage), the first appearance of the marrow cavity was noted in a case, 11.8cm in length. In the coronoid and angle regions, it was observed in intertrabecular areas in cases, 27.0cm and 31.0cm in length each. 2) These marrow cavities were composed mainly of primitive mesenchymal tissues with dilated capillaries and surrounded by cartilaginous or bone tissues. 3) In the condylar cartilage, the marrow cavity (which had appeared first in a case, 11.8cm in length) had occupied the entire cartilage in a case, 20.9cm in length, and then extended into a posterior part of the mandibular body in a case, 36.0cm in length. In the cartilage in incisor region, the marrow cavity (which had appeared in a case, 11.8cm in length) replaced the whole cartilage in a case, 27.0cm in length, and then extended into the mandibular body in a case, 39.0cm in length. This marrow cavity communicated with that in the body in 3 months after birth. In the coronoid region, the marrow cavity (which had been formed first in intertrabecular areas in a case, 27.0cm in length) was unchanged until 5 days after birth. The broad marrow cavity was found on 7 days after birth. On 30 days after birth, the marrow cavity communicated with a marrow cavity in the condylar region. In the angle region, the marrow cavity (whose appearance had been noted in the intertrabecular areas in a case, 31.0cm in length) extended forward and backward as well as downward. In a case, 36.0cm in length, the cavity increased remarkably in size, and communicated with other marrow cavities in a case, 41.5cm in length. An appearance of osteoclasts was associated with the extension of these marrow cavities. 4) In 7 months after birth, the marrow cavity was completed and surrounded by a thin cortex with the maturation of trabecula into lamellar bone. 5) There was an intimate relation between the development of the bone marrow cavity and of hemopoiesis. In marrow cavities in the cartilages in condylar and incisor regions, the first hemopoiesis occurred in a case, 11.8cm in length, consisting almost exclusively of granulopoiesis. In a case, 20.9cm in length, the two marrow cavities were occupied by the hemopoiesis, which was composed of a mixture of granulopoiesis and erythropoiesis with the predominance of the former cell series. In a case, 27.0cm in length, all 3 hemopoietic cell series were observed. In the coronoid and angle regions, the first hemopoiesis occurred in cases, 24.0cm and 23.0cm in length each. 6) In the cartilages in condylar and incisor regions, the hemopoiesis occurred after the formation of the marrow cavities in the cartilages. In the coronoid and angle regions, on the other hand, the appearance of hemopoiesis preceded that of the marrow cavities. Therefore, the former cavities were defined as the primary marrow cavity, and the latter as the secondary. 7) The time of completion of the mandibular marrow cavity (7 months after birth) was also the time when fatty marrows began to appear, and deciduous teeth initiated their eruption. This suggested the role of the development of marrow cavity for the completion of the internal structure of the mandible.
