In oral infections diseases, especially periodontal disease, macrophage in local lymph node seems to play important roles. In the course of the study of the role of the macrophages, induced macrophages were investigated biologically and immunologically. Peritoneal macrophages were induced by the injection of Peptone, Lymphocalt T and cell wall fragments of Corynebacterium xerosis, and were harvested and cultured. The morphology of the macrophages were observed in the course of the culture period. The cultured macrophages were morphologically classified into three types : A type (round cells), B type (long cells) and C type (flat cells). The propotion of the Fc-receptor positive cell was also measured. Results obtained were as follows ; 1) In general the number of A type macrophage was dominant in the early culture period and decreased in the later period. On the other hand the number of the B type macrophage and the C type one increased in the course of the culture period. The A type cell seemed to convert into the B type cell or the C type cell during the culture. 2) When the macrophages were induced by Peptone or the bacterial cell wall fragment, both the A type cell and the B type cell decreased in the number. The B type cell, however, increased. In the case of Lymphocalt T, the A type cell gradually decreased in the number, but both the B type cell and the C type cell increased in the early period and then decreased. 3) When the macrophages were induced by Peptone, the Fc-receptor was recognized on the cell of A type, B type and C type in the range 30-35%, 5-10% and 40-46%, respectively. In the case of Lymphocalt T the receptor was recognized on the cell of A type, B type and C type in the range 0-15%, 0-9% and 10-50%, respectively. In the case of the cell wall fragment the receptor was recognized on the cell of A type, B type and C type in the range 8-13%, 5-7% and 37-47%, respectively. 4) During the culture period the Fc-receptor tends to be found preferentially on the C type cell, followed by the A type cell and the B type cell in the decreasing order. 5) In each inducer the Fc-receptor tends to be found preferentially in the C type cell, followed by the A type cell and the B type cell in the decreasing order. 6) It is suggested that the activation of the cultured macrophage correlated with the occurreance of the Fc-receptor.
