170 dd-N female mice (10-week-old) were used in a radiation study involving a single dose of localized head X-ray radiation of 500 R, 1000 R, and 2000 R (200kVp, 19 mA, 1.53 mm Cu half value layer, 40 cm target skin distance). The irradiated animals were sacrificed in 3, 7, 11, 14, and 17 days following the treatment. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The radiation dose of 500 R was not influential to the body condition and to the oral cavity, macroscopically. Microscopically, atrophy in epithelia of gingiva and tongue, and degeneration in parotid gland seen in 3 days days disappeared in 17 days. But atrophy of muscle fiber, infiltration of lymphocytes, and congestion in tongue were still observed in 17 days. 2) The radiation dose of 1000 R was influential to the body condition, but the disturbance disappeared in 17 days. Macroscopically, mucous membrane of the oral cavity revealed hyperemia and wetting in 7 days, but these findings disappeared in 17 days. Microscopically, atrophy and keratosis of skin and gingiva, degeneration of parotid gland which occured in 3 days disappeared in 17 days. But a slight infiltration of lymphocytes and plasmocytes in derma, disappearance of lamellar structure of alveolar bone, hyalinization of collagen fiber in osseous tissue, and atrophy of muscle fiber in tongue were still observed in 17 days. 3) The radiation dose of 2000 R to head have severe effects to whole body which lead the animal to the death in 10 or 11 days. Macroscopic lesions of mucous membrane of the oral cavity in 7 days were most severe, and ulcer was developed in mucous membrane. Microscopically, too, lesions of the oral cavity in 7 days were most severe. From the microscopic findings, the major lesions following to irradiation could be attributed to metabolic disturbance of the oral tissue, especially to regressive tissue change of the osseous tissue.
