Availability of intentionally ankylosed teeth as the anchorage for orthodontic movement was investigated. The upper first premolar on one side in 22 dogs was intentionally replanted. After 8 weeks, consequential ankylosis was induced in 15 dogs. Orthodontic force (150 g) was applied with a closed coil spring set between the upper first and second premolars to move them reciprocally. On the opposite side, an identical appliance was set without replantation. Orthodontic force was applied for one, two, four, and eight weeks. At the end of each period, a histopathological investigation was made with microradiograms and the labeling method. The ankylotic area enlarged and maturation progressed with time even after the application of orthodontic force. On the side without ankylosis, the first premolar inclined distally with extrusion and the second premolar inclined with mesial root intruded and distal root extruded. On the side with ankylosis, the first premolar did not move but the second premolar inclined mesially with mesial root intruded and distal root extruded. The foregoing findings suggested the availability of intentionally ankylosed teeth as the anchorage for orthodontic movement.
