The object of this experiment is to analyze by photoelastic methods stress concentrations and distributions around a screw-type implant under cyclic loads and during a stop period. Bone-models were made of a 3-7 mixed polyester which could show the birefringence based on the retarded elasticity more clearly than an epoxy resin. Results were as follows : 1. Stress concentrations were recognized near screw threads and at the apex of the screw. 2. The degrees of stress concentrations were larger under cyclic loads than static loads. 3. The quantity of strain increased as a loading time accumulated. 4. The strains which were yielded by cyclic loads consisted of perfect elastic strains and retarded elastic strains. 5. It took a considerably long stop period before strains ran out completely.
