In this study, changes in vascular diameters were examined in female college athletic swimmers, who had continuously exercised in the recumbent position in water throughout their growth period, by Echocardiography. The subjects were 10 female college athletic swimmers, and 10 non-athlete adult females were examined as controls. Echocardiography was performed using a HEWLETT PACKARD M2410A Echocardiograph and a transducer (L7535/S2520), which is an accessory of the Echocardiograph. The vascular diameters were measured in the aortic ring, bilateral cervical common carotid arteries, bilateral radial arteries, and bilateral dorsal arteries of the foot. Concerning the results of this study : The aortic diameter was significantly greater in the swimmers than in the controls (p<0.01). The diameters of the bilateral dorsal arteries of the foot also differed significantly between the swimmers and the controls (p<0.01). Athletic swimmers undergo vigorous training always in the horizontal recumbent position. This continuous exercise load is considered to promote the return of circulating blood, to induce increases in the cardiac output and vascular diameter. The increase in arterial diameter in athletic swimmer may depend upon the degree of swimming exercise-induced adaptation.
