The paper highlights two main areas of English teaching that should be considered when assisting students in their use of English (L2) over the telephone. The first area is the teaching of polite phrases that are needed for telephone use and which are often only used in telephone conversations. The second area and the one that receives little attention is that of ordinary conversational telephone English. This is needed by business/office personnel working at an international level, in order to problem-solve in English (L2) over the 'phone. The paper recommends that the practice of conversing in English over the telephone not be left to one unit or chapter of a course. Instead, telephone calls in English (L2) should be an integral part of the whole course and provide opportunities for problem-solving as well as the usual practice of specific telephone terminology in English. It is hoped that this paper will encourage English language instructors to carefully plan telephone practice in English throughout their Business Communication courses.
