Hermann Patsch (1938〜) criticizes in his dissertation "The Lord's Supper and Historical Jesus" (1972) Albert Schweitzer (1875〜1965)'s interpretation of the words of Institution of the Lord's Supper. Following the Protestant Reformist Huldrych Zwingli's symbolic interpretation of the Lord's Supper (1524) many exegates during the 19th century until A. Julicher (1892) interpret the words of Institution of the Lord's Supper, namely, "This is my body/this is my blood" (Mark 14, 23・24 par.) as doubleparable and the Eucharistic actions of Jesus as symbolactions. In his book "The Problem of the Lord's Supper based on the Scientific Researches during the 19th Century and on the Historical Accouts." (1901) Schweitzer makes sharp criticism on them which Patch on the other hand estimates highly. On the other hand Patsch points out that Schweitzer himself couldn't get free of the symbolical interpretation of the Lord's Supper in the same book, tries to interpret the words of Institution as parables out of the life of Jesus in his following book "The Mystery of the Kingdom of God: The Secret of Jesus' Messiahship and Passion" (1901), but at last confesses "Why and in what meaning Jesus calls the bread...... and the wine...... just his body and his blood will remain always obscure" in his book "The Mystery of Paul the Apostle" (1930). Indicating p.107f. in "The Mystery of the Kingdom of God" and two accouts in the recently (1998) published Schweitzer's book "Lectures at Srasbourg University (Posthumous Works)" I prove that Patsch's criticism is right.
