Where Vocabulary Meets Grammar : A Preliminary Study

The purpose of this study is to examine learner's states of acquisiton of a specific grammatical item: psychological verbs. Psych verbs are quite difficult for learner to acquire and errors associated with them have been reported. However, until recently, little research has been done (ex. White et al. 1998). The subjects of this study are 19 Japanese university students. 3 tasks are given to them: (1) vocabulary translation (2) sentence completion and (3) grammaticality judgements. The results indicate that the subjects show more difficulty in causative type of psych verbs than non-causative type of psych verbs.
