This paper provides an overview of the author's experiences in teaching an American culture course on social issues with the use of a large number of movies combined with lectures and discussion. After explaining the background of and rationale for the course, the author discusses the advantages of using video movies in language courses. He then outlines the structure of the course, and following this, gives an in-depth description of three of the issues taught in the course, detailing the movies used, the commentary on the movies, and the lecture/discussion material presented in the class. Finally, the author draws the conclusions gained from the teaching of the course, including the benefits gained by the participants and a discussion of work done by the students. The author ends the paper with an argument for the desirability of using a wide assortment of well-chosen movies in a course of this nature.
