This paper discusses Muriel Spark's seventeenth novel, The Only Problem (1984). This novel deals with where reason ends. Its protagonist is studying 'The Book of Job', and trying to solve the mystery of Job's suffering. Two stories progress in parallel, as her novels often do. One is metaphysical, the protagonist's meditating on 'The Book of Job', and the other is secular, the protagonist's familiy business: the protagonist's wife's demand for a divorce and her involvement in a terrorist group. The latter story progresses frustratedly because of the protagonist's indifference to it. Spark presents George de La Tour's painting, 'Job Visited by His Wife', which connects these two apparently different stories. This paper discusses the significance of the painting and demonstrates that this novel deals with the theme Spark pursues in her works.
