During these times of worldwide environmental crisis, changes in our thinking about man, nature, and human life have made it possible to regcognize a special originality and relevance in Wordsworth's attitude towards nature as represented in his works. Although new historicists in the 1980's considered Wordsworth's bond with native Lakeland as a sympton of his political apostasy, Jonathan Bate takes an ecocritical view of his works and points out that his Giude to the Lakes was in fact a key text in the history of the British conservation movement. Wordsworth's sonnet cycle The River Duddon, which was first published with his Guide, also provides a way into "deep green " thinking. Through the culmination of our contact with the river and the poem, we realize both the power of the human imagination and the insignificance of man. It offers a first step towards the knowledge that humankind is not self-sufficient and teaches us how to live as part of the intricate economy of nature.
