The Acquisition of the Lexicon : The Interface Between the Lexicon and Syntax

This study deals with the acquisition of the lexicon, in particular, verbs. Although not much emphasis has been put on the lexicon in second language acquisition (SLA), the acquisition of verbs is closely related with that of syntax and it is an essential aspect in the process of SLA. For example, in the case of psych verbs, the argument structure of the verbs poses learning problems. That is, the linking rules which map the theta roles to syntactic positions seem arbitrary. Moreover, in this study, lexically oriented L2 research is briefly reviewed and it is argued that more systematic research has to be done for lexical studies to be model-based research. It is necessary to explore how the lexicon functions interacting with other parts of a language, in particular, the interface between the lexicon and syntax has to be closely examined by empirical studies.
