Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) endeavoured not to interpret the 'words of institution of the Lord's Supper' (Mark 14, 22-25par.) dogmatically, but to interpret them historically. In this case the dogma meant the eucharistic doctrines of the Reformers, namely Luther and Zwingli. In his book "The Lord's Supper in connection with the Life of Jesus and the History of Primitive Christianity" (1901) Schweitzer mentioned the eucharistic theories of twenty-one scholars in the nineteenth century. Among them D. Fr. Strauss and A. Eichhorn exerted the greatest influences upon Schweitzer. All of them, namely Strauss, Eichhorn and Schweitzer rejected both Luther's realistic interpretation of the Lord's Supper and Zwingli's symbolic one and strived to interprete the 'words of institution' in each way historically but Schweitzer alone, admitted that Zwingli was the first person that had interpreted the 'words of institution' rationally. It reflected naturally upon Schweitzer's interpretation of them: in fact, he interpreted them symbolically and attributed them to the historical Jesus.
