Function words show grammatical relationships, and are usually unstressed and reduced in conneted speech. However, when they are stressed, they are often contrastive; they are contrasted with some other counterpart. For example, I want HIM, not HER. The mail is not FROM him, but TO him. Take a shower. -Oh, but I HAVE taken a shower already. I don't need money-Then what DO you need? In addition, function words when stressed can also be used for the emotional highlighting of a message uttered by a speaker. He WILL be pleased. Here the speaker is not implying that someone has suggested that she will not be pleased. Rather, the speaker is conveying enthusiasm: a personal conviction about the truth of what is predicted. Similarly, Hey, where IS everybody? Doctors! There's no satisfaction to be got out of THEM! What are YOU doing at this hour? Oh, God! What happened to YOU!- I walked into the door. What can I do? -Do? There's nothing TO do. In conclusion, if normally unstressed function words receive stress (especially sentence stress), the effect is often to add emotional or exclamatory emphasis to the whole sentence.
