Many resarchers have called censored part of Shakespeare's Richard II provocative for the unsettled 1590s, however, closer study of how the parliament/deposition scene is represented in Richard II calls that conclusion into question. Can that kind of representation be considered as a devise to avoid government censorship during the reign of Queen Elizabeth when public discussion of royal succession was forbidden, or as the genuine dramatical intention of the author? These hypothesises, however, were not so significant when this drama was written and performed in the mid-1590s. It is very clear indeed that the followers of the Earl of Essex asked some of the Lord Chamberlain's Men to perform the drama dealing with the deposition and death of King Richard II, a genuine tragedy, in an effort to stimulate morale on the eve of the Essex rebellion. This drama was a politically dangerous because of the analogy between Queen Elizabeth and Richard II, even though evasive action against government censorship was deliberately planned in the drama, and the drama itself was considered to be a tragedy.
