A new ion chrornatographic method using an ultraviolet spectrophotometric detector has been developed for the simultaneous determination of nitrite, and nitrate ions in foods. Measurements conducted at an absorption wavelength of 210 nm using 15 mM Na_2B_4O_7/1 mM Na_2CO_3 as the eluent showed that both nitrite and nitrate ions could be determined without the influence of chloride ion. The detection limits were 10 ppb for nitrite ion and 5 ppb for nitrate ion.
