Methods to readily and yet reliably estimate the octane number and hydrocarbon type of motor gasoline by proton magnetic resonance (PMR) spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared absorption (FT-IR) spectrometry and mass spectrometry (MS) were investigated. Applying PMR spectrometry, a method to estimate octane number was established. When combined with the graphic method of pattern recognition and multiple regression analysis, it not only numerically predicted the octane number but also permitted visual recognition of the relative level of octane number. It further provided visual information on the gasoline bases. On the other hand, a multiple regression equation to estimate the hydrocarbon type of motor gasoline and a method to analyse motor gasoline containing methyl tert-butyl ether was also established. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to establish a method to derive the octane number from the intensities of absorption related to methyl, methylene and aromatic compounds, by applying the decomposition software to absorption groups with C-H stretching vibration. From the results of the graphic method and multiple regression analysis, it was possible to estimate the octane number. In the application of MS, it was shown that MS was also useful for estimation of octane number and hydrocarbon type of motor gasoline.
