A study was carried out in order to elucidate the false detection of cyanide, to improve the total cyanide determination method and to develop a new cyanide determination method. Various kinds of organic compounds and nitrogen compounds were examined regarding their effects on the formation of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the distillation process. Most organic compounds and some inorganic nitrogen compounds, such as hydroxylammonium and nitrite ion, have been proved to be related to the formation of HCN. The false detection and formation of cyanide occurred in a printed circuit-board plating, a photographic processing solution, a cinema-film processing solution, cation electro-deposit paints, aluminum dross and so on. The possible cyanide formation schemes were estimated. An optimized analytical procedure for the determination of cyanide compounds, which has no possibility of cyanide formation, was proposed. In the first method, the cyanide ion was determined with a coulometrically generated hypobromite ion using a biamperometric end-point detection system. It was successfully applied to the plating solution and their effluents. The second method to be developed was an ion chromatography which could be used to determine free cyanide and metal cyanide complexes using a conductivity detector (CD). The cyanide ion is oxidized to the cyanate ion by sodium hypochlorite or a chloramine T solution, and then indirectly determined with CD. The proposed method has proved to be useful for the determination of cyanide compounds in natural water samples, as well as wastewater and plating solutions.
