As a base of the PIVOT system, a hi-directional Japanes English Machine Translation was developed with the perspective of adapting it to multi-lingual translations. In-deed, this first system was designed so that it could share its architecture and prineiples with other systems. Ther fore, the authors build the French generation system using the English system as a foundation. This required a comparison analysis of the French grammar topics with their English counterparts, so as to make the adaptation possible ;included in these topics, is the voice defiultion. Voice is a verb form or a particular syntactic construction indicating the relation ship between the subject, the object and the verb. In French language, three voices exist :the active one points out that the subject carries out the action ;the passive one indicates that the syntactic subject is the goal or the sufferer; the pronominal forms express certain relationship (action performs on the actor or for the actor, reciprodty, etc...)between the subject and the object. One of the first step of the French sentence generation is to find out the subject (actor or sufferer),from the inter-lingual conceptual representation delivered by the analysis, and to dedde consequently the voice the target sentence will have. Indeed, as the French passive is very restricted, a passive English sentence may not be translated into a passive French sentence for instance. Therefore, either an active or a pronominal construction is required. To select the voice and the subject of a French sentence, the authors propose an algorithm which transforms the original representation in a French-dependent semantic structure, hence the voice and subject selections in the structure planuing algorithm. After pointing out the generation problems conceruing the voice selection, the French passtve will be analyzed in comparison with the English passive. Finally, an algorithm for the voice and subject selections will be described.
