Five new types (27 strains) of Lactobacillus pastorianus were isolated from draught beer et al., and they were temporarily named Bacillus B1,B2,B3,B4 and B5. Bacillus B1 is similar to L. malefermentans which was isolated by Walker et al. at Manchester from sour beer, since L. malefermentans is unable to proliferate in unhopped brewery wort. However, they are distinguished principally by the facts that the former ferments only fructose, maltose and glucose, and can not ferment inulin, while the latter can not ferment fructose, and ferments vigoroulsy inulin. Bacillus B1 is similar to L. heterohiochii since it requires essentially mevalonic acid. However, they are distinguished by the facts that the former can ferment maltose, and resists to hop antiseptic, and its growth is stimulated by CO_2. It is concluded, therefore, that Bacillus B1 represents a new type of Lactobacillus pastorianus hitherto undescribed. The characteristics : A non-motile, Gram-positive, catalase-negative rod. Optimum temperature for growth is 30℃, optimum pH value for growth is 4.8.
