In order to examine the relation between the antitubercular activity and vitamin B_6 activity, several kinds of mercaptal and isoquinoline derivatives of pyridoxal or pyridoxal-phosphate were synthesized, and biochemical tests were performed on these compounds. Mercaptals were prepared by the reaction of ethylmercaptan with pyridoxal or pyridoxal-phosphate, and these compounds had on antitubercular activity for Mycobacterium tuberculosum avium or human-type tubercle bacilli, H_<37>Rv strain. Vitamin B_6 activity was confirmed on pyridoxal-diethylmercaptal, pyridoxal-6,8-thioctic acid mercaptal and the compounds prepared by the reaction of Dopa with pyridoxal or pyridoxal-phosrphate. Supposing that the inhibition of vitamin B_6-enzyme by Dopa was due to the combination of pyridoxal phosphate and Dopa, tetrahydroisoquinoline carbonate was synthesized. Pyridoxal-or pyridoxal-phosphate-6,8-thioctic acid mercaptals showed only weeker action than pyridoxal-phosphate for tryptophanase of the Escherichia coli communior.
