The present paper is to show that mucilage, a mixture of polysaccharides and deoxyribonucleic acid, can be obtained easily from sewage activated sludge.The activated sludge weighing 33g as dry matter was mixed with acetone at room temperature and left alone for a few hours. A yield of 488 mg of these polymerized substances was extracted from the sludge by 0.5 M sodium carbonate. This extract was soluble in both alkaline and neutral solutions. An insignificant amount of protein was detected by means of ninhydrin and biuret reactions. About 35 per cent of nucleic acid was presented by measuring absorption at 260mμ. The basic components of hydrolysate and the content of deoxyribose indicated that this nucleic acid was mostly deoxyribonucleic acid. The non-ultraviolet absorbing material in the extract was confirmed to be mainly polysaccharides. Furthermore, it was also suggested that polysaccharides and nucleic acid related substances were isolated easily from the acetone treated sludge by extracting it with water at room temperature. But they were scarcely released from the sludge without this preliminary acetone treatment even by the same extraction with water.
