By investigating the effects of cysteine and thioglycolic acid on the fungistatic and bacteriostatic activities of seven nitro compounds and 2-methyl-1,4naphtoquionne, and the several other points, the following results were obtained.1) At pH 4.6 no effects of SH compounds were observed on the fungistatic activities of nitro compounds. At pH 7.2 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide, 2-(5-nitro)furyl methyl ketone, 4-nitroquinoline and 2-(5-nitro)-furaldehyde semicarbazone were strongly, antagonized by SH compounds, but p-nitrophenol, o-nitrophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol were not affected.2) The antagonistic effect of SH compounds on 2-methyl-1,4-naphtoquinone was independent of the hydrogen ion concentration of the medium between pH 4.6 and 7.2.3) Both 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide and 2-(5-nitro)-furylmethylketone were partially adsorbed by washed cells of T. utilis and the rest remained outside the cells converted into some unknown substance. On the contrary, such a phenomenon was never observed in case of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone. Thus, the above results on the mode of action seem to indicate that nitroquinoline resembles nitrofran derivatives more closely than quinoid substances, and that their action is due to the labile nitro groups in the molecule.
