• The shapes of D.B.H. and height distributions were studied using the growth records of a Cryptomeria japonica D.DON plantation located on level ground in the Akita District of Japan. Both distributions became J-shaped as the stand grew older. This tendency was more noticeable in the height distribution. The J-shaped height distribution could be further sub-divided into two distributions describing the upper-story trees and the lower-story trees. The former showed a bell-shaped distribution and included more than eighty percent of the standing trees and more than ninety-five percent of the growing stock volume. A two-dimensional normal distribution fit well to the D.B.H.-height distribution of trees in the upper story. Since the solution of a BACHELIER type two-dimensional forest-transition equation is a two-dimensional normal distribution, these results agree with the theory satisfactorily.
