Excised shoots of five Cryptomeria cultivars were desiccated in summer and autumn, and marked differences were found in desiccation resistance among cultivars. When rehydrated, these desiccated shoots recovered their turgidity fully while relative water content decreased to about 60%. Damage to tissue was not observed until relative water content decreased to about 36%. In this range of desiccation, no differences were found among cultivars, but as relative water content decreased further, differences in recovery of water content and damage of tissue became apparent among cultivars.
