In this experiment the variations of mechanical properties of wood by heat treatment at high temperature air were tested. The author adopted the absorbed energy in impact bending, the Young's modulus and the modulus of rupture in static bending as mechanical properties of wood. The species used in this experiment were HINOKI (Chamaecyparis obtusa ENDL.) and BUNA (Fagus crenata BLUME). The test pieces were heated at 150℃ and 200℃ in electric thermostat. The times of heat-treatment were 1,3,5,10,20 hours.The results are as follows : 1. The absorbed energy evidently decreases by heat treatment. For instance, the value decreases to 1/2 of that of virgin wood by the heat-treatment of 5 hours at 150℃ and 1 hour at 200℃, and to 1/5 by the treatment of 5 hours at 200℃.2. The Young's modulus in bending is scarcely affected by the heat-treatment of 5 hours at 150℃. But at 200℃ the values of HINOKI increased by the same treatment. When the treating-hour increases, the values decreases gradually. On the other hand, the values of BUNA is scarcely affected even at 200℃. The reason of the increase of HINOKI's values has to be studied by the more precise test.3. The modulus of rupture in bending is scarcely affected by the heat-treatment of 5 hours at 150℃. But at 200℃, the values decreases to about 1/2 of virgin woood.
