The progress in magnetically induced super-resolution (MSR) since 1991 is reviewed. Among various methods that have been proposed for MSR, two are now being investigated for commercialization. One is improved rear aperture detection (RAD), which has made possible a capacity ten times higher than that of the first-generation ISO 3.5-inch magneto-optical disks. The other is improved center aperture detection (CAD), which has been used in advanced storage magneto-optical (ASMO) disks. Two extensions of MSR, the magnetic amplifying magneto-optical system (MAMMOS) and domain wall displacement detection (DWDD), have recently been shown to have potential areal densities of more than 10 Gb/in^2 when used with red laser diodes.
