We calculated the exchange force between two magnetic Fe films by first-principles calculations. It is shown that the exchange force is sensitive to the film-film separation and relative atomic site on the surface for d/a<1, where d is the distance between surfaces of the two films and a the lattice constant of bulk Fe. Based on their results, the feasibility of exchange force microscopy (EFM), which probes the exchange force between the tip and the sample, was discussed.
