Magnetic Anisotropy, Interfacial Hybridization, and Orbital Magnetic Moment in Co/Pt Multilayers

The interfacial magnetic and electronic states of Co/Pt multilayers have been studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) measurements. The Co L_<2,3> and M_<2,3> SXMCD data reveal a strongly enhanced perpendicular Co orbital moment in multilayers which show perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Large SXMCD signals were observed also at the Pt N_<6,7> and O_<2,3> edges, showing a strong interfacial Pt 5d-Co 3d hybridization. Evidence is presented for a transition from fcc to hcp Co with increasing Co-layer thickness. All these observaed effects are shown to drive PMA.
