Giant Magnetic Anisotropy in Sm_2Fe_<17> Induced by Nitrogenation

We performed high-field magnetization measurements for the aligned powder of a high-quality Sm_2Fe_<17>N_<3.1> at 4.2K up to 23T. The result indicates a strong anisotropic behavior in the magnetization curves along the parallel and perpendicular diredtions to the aligned one. From the hard axismagnetization curve, the uniaxial anisotropy constans K_1 and K_2 in the expression as E_a=K_1sin^2θ+K_2sin^4θ were estimated to be K_1=2.3 x10^3J/kg and K_2=2.5 x10^3J/kg using Sucksmith-Thompson plot. These values are the largest among the previously reported ones. Assuming that the Jmixing is meglected at zero temrerature, the crystal electric field parameter A_2^0 estimated from K_1 and K_2 is 〜 -650K/a_0^2, the value of which fairly agree with the theoretically estimated value.
