Structure and Magnetic Properties of Nd-Fe-B Films

Thin films containing Nd_2Fe_<14>B phase were obtained by rf-sputtering at room temperature and subsequent crystallization by annealing. In the Nd-rich films, besides randomly oriented Nd_2Fe_<14>B phase, a lot of amount of NdO, Nd(OH)_3, NdFe_4B_4 phases were observed. As Nd composition becomes richer than Nd_2Fe_<14>B, the coercivity increases up to 23 kOe. Ferromagnetic phases assigned by thermomagnetic analysis above room temperature were Nd_2Fe_<14>B and Fe. The initial magnetization curves saturated easily, which suggests the nucleation type magnetizing process. The high coercivity in the Nd-rich films may be due to suppression of growth of Nd_2Fe_<14>B particulate size by the surrounding subsidiary phases.
