A series of chemical pretreatments for the enzymatic saccharification of sugarcane bagasse as cellulosic biomass were done to obtain ethanol via fermentable sugars.Through the batch using process an autoclave, a 1% solution of NaOH-Na_2S (solution : bagasse=20 : 1) showed excellent results in obtaining cellulase sensitive cellulose in which the rate of enzymatic saccharification always exceeded 50%.To save energy, this batch process was modified into a semi-continuous process applying a twin-screw extruder which has been widely used for processing of thermoplastic polymers, and good results were obtained on bagasse with a 20% solution of NaOH-Na_2S (solution : baggasse=1 : 1)(Table 4).Furthermore, to simplify the operation and shorten the reaction time, a full continuous process without premixing was adopted and similar good results were obtained with a 4% solution of NaOH-Na_2S (solution : bagasse=1 : 4) within 2 min (Table 5).The twin-screw extruder is one of the useful tool for chemical pretreatment of bagasse and probably of other biomass.
