A series of chemical pretreatments for the enzymatic saccharification of eleven varieties of cellulosic biomass, including sugarcane bagasse, were tried.A semi-continuous process with a twin-screw extruder was used to obtain cellulase-sensitive cellulose by solubilizing lignin and hemi-cellulose in the biomass.The divided particles (2 mm diameter) of biomass were allowed to react batchwise with 5-22% solution of NaOH-Na_2S (solution : biomass=0.5-1.5 : 1.0) at room temperature for 30 min, and then continuously fed into the extruder in which the cylinder was maintained at 150-200℃. The screw rotation speed was fixed at 200 rpm through the reaction.The first group, corn stover, rice straw and eulalia gave over 50% saccharification rate, this figure is practically equivalent with that of bagasse.The second group, cardboard and newspaper, were treated and we obtained celluloses that have the saccharification rate ranging from 27% to 35%.The third group including lauan wood, rice hulls, cucumber tree, and pine wood were also treated similarly, but less than 21% saccharification was obtained. With beech wood, a fairly good figure (32%) was obtained, exceptionally.
