Garbage, a malodorous substance, was deodorized within 2.5 days with a seed culture which had been used to deodorize domestic animal feces. The optimum conditions for deodorization which were investigated in petridishes were as follows : pH, 5.7-8.7; temperature, 30-37℃, moisture, 50-60%; optimum and yet, minimum size of the seed culture, 30% (w/w). Twenty kg of garbage was mixed with 6 kg of the seed culture and 2 kg of rice hulls, and then left at 30℃ in a wooden box with a wire net across the bottom. The garbage was completely deodorized within 2.5 days. During the deodorization process, the numbers of mesophilic bacteria, actinomycetes and yeasts increased. With the increase in microbial numbers, the pH rose from 5.3 to 6.8; and the temperature, from 15 to 50℃. Malodorous components, in the untreated garbage, such as styrene, and low-molecular-weight fatty acids, for example, iso-butyric acid, n- or iso-valeric acid, could not be detected in the deodorized garbage. The results of chemical analysis showed that the treated garbage is useful as an organic nitrogen manure.
