Floating scum from the wastewater of a fish-processing facility, a malodorous substance, can be deodorized by microorganisms within 72 h. Natural aeration was adequate until the temperature of the heaped mixture (its porosity was 1.8 l/kg) of the fresh scum and seed culture began to rise progressively. After that, forced aeration at a flow rate of 0.36 m^3/m^3/min was necessary for shorter-period deodorization. The amount of the seed culture added above 30% (w/w) was found to be suitable for both the inoculation and the adjustment of moisture content. The mixture with lower heaping depths was deodorized in a shorter time than that with higher heaping depth.However, the heaped mixture with the highest depth in this study (58cm) was deodorized within 72h. The chemical analysis showed that the content of crude fat and the total nitrogen amount were decreased by 30% and 10%, respectively, as compared with those of the fresh scum.The pH rose 7.3 to 8.4. The moisture content was decreased from 78.2 to 25.1%. The thiobarbituric acid value was decreased by about 30% during deodorization. Forty-four microbial strains with deodorizing activity were isolated from the deodorized scum, of which Corynebacterium was dominant.
