Two nocardiophages designated as NJL and NS-8,showing a difference in plaque shape, were isolated from sewage, and some properties of these phages were investigated. They formed plaques against Nocardia sp. CF222,but not other species of Nocardia tested. Phage NS-8 produced regular plaques, while phage NJL showed plaques very irregular in shape and size. Electron microscopic observation of these phage-particles revealed the presence of a hexagonal head and a very long flexible tail.Serologically, phage NJL had no relation to phage NS-8. The nucleic acid of these phages was determined to be double strand DNA.These phages were sensitive to temperature pH, ultraviolet irradiation and chloro-form. Both phages were comparatively stable in ether-and phenol-peptone broth. In one-step growth experiments, phage NJL showed a 100 min latent period, a 70 min rise period and a burst size of 13,and phage NS-8 showed a 140 min latent period, a 50 min rise period and a burst size of 106. These phages did not form plaques on plates of peptone agar media containing sodium oxalate or sodium citrate. However, for adsorption to host cells, these phages did not require divalent cations.
